The department of biology : (12 laboratories, 236 teachers, 350 researchers, 520 ITA-IATOSS) organize the research and the education around five major axes: the study of macromolecules and the cellular functions, biology of micro-organisms, cellular biology and development, biology and physiology of plants and biodiversity and ecology. Moreover, two transverse themes, the neurosciences together with the biology of the systems and the interfaces physics-chemistry-biology are developed as well. Particularly, it includes the questions connected to the environment, which are obviously multidisciplinary.

The department of chemistry : (3 laboratories and several teams, 125 teachers, 130 researchers, 160 ITA-IATOSS) develops the research according to four main axes, which are transverse themes federating all the activities: environment, health, information and energy. These themes are obviously connected to a strong societal request and the various actors of this department try, with internationally recognized basic research, to bring innovative answers.

The department of computer science
: (2 laboratories, 191 teachers, 55 researchers, 31 ITA-IATOSS) drives basic and applied research covering a wide field of the computing including the theoretical basis of the computing (algorithmic, theory of the graphs, combinatorial optimization), the programming and the software engineering, the management of data and large-scale calculations, the networks, the artificial intelligence and the apprenticeship, the biocomputing, the automatic treatment of both oral and written language, the translation, the sign language, the human-machine interaction, the interactive display visualization of information, the virtual reality.

The department of mathematics : (1 laboratory, 130 teachers, 30 researchers, 20 ITA-IATOSS and a library with 6 ITA-IATOSS) is structured in five teams, which develop the main part of the current mathematics: harmonic analysis, arithmetic and algebraic geometry, numerical analysis, probability, statistics and modeling, topology and dynamics.

The department of physics
: (20 laboratories, 300 teachers, 500 researchers, 870 ITA-IATOSS) performs research activities according to a very wide field, centered on the study of the existing phenomena at very big and very small spatial and temporal scales: optics, atomic physics, interaction light-matter, condensed matter, new states of matter, nanosciences and nanotechnologies, mechanics, hydrodynamics, energetics, interface physic-biology, biomedical, information, communications, systems.

The department of the earth sciences : (1 laboratory, 38 teachers-, 5 researchers, 26 ITA-IATOSS) develops research activities on the characterization, the measurement and the modeling of the interactions in the environments of surface or their reconstructions in the past.

History of sciences:
(1 team, 21 teachers and associated researchers, 2 IATOSS). Research on both transmission and circulation of the scientific knowledge from an historic and didactic point of view in the contemporary French society and more specifically in the second part of twentieth century.

Transverse research axis between departments (some examples): physical modeling in earth sciences, mineralogy of the surface of March, thermal history of rocks. Biology of systems and interface physics-chemistry-biology. Biology-environment. Biocomputing and computational neurosciences. Grid of calculations.
