Diploma in French as a Foreign Language

The University offers a Diploma in French as a Foreign Language (DU de FLE), a French preparation course for students pre-selected for Master’s courses, or the 3rd year of a Bachelor's degree, at the University Paris-Sud/Paris-Saclay.

Enrolment procedure 2017-2018


The 2017-2018 recruitment campaign for the Diploma in French as a Foreign Language (DU de FLE) will start on January 15th 2017. Applicants should send their applications as soon as possible.

To be able to join the diploma programme you must first have a conditional offer for inclusion in the 3rd year of a Bachelor 's degree or a Master’s programme at Paris-Sud/Paris-Saclay  for the following year and must also have a current minimum level of A2 in French.

For example: DU de FLE-Paris-Sud-UFR Sciences en 2017-2018 suivi du M1 Physiques et Applications en 2018-2019

Your application must include the following documents:

  • CV in French
  • Covering letter, in French, which indicates the exact title of the Master's course you wish to join respecting this format: Objet : Candidature au DU de FLE Paris-Sud-UFR Sciences en 2017-18 suivi du ANNEE ET NOM EXACT DU DIPLOME VISE en 2018-19. For example : DU de FLE-Paris-Sud-UFR Sciences en 2017-2018 / (M1 Physiques et Applications en 2018-2019)
  • Copies of all your qualifications/degrees with a French translation.
  • -   Copies of all your grades obtained for these qualifications, including your level in French language studies.
  • Copy of your Birth certificate with French translation.
  • Copy of your passport.

Each file that you send us must be clearly labelled with your name and the type of document. For example: "FAMILY NAME First name CV" and the files should preferably be sent in Zip format.

Your dossier of application will first of all be examined by the DU de FLE team and then sent to the head of the Master's or Bachelor's degree programme that you wish to join, for their recommendation. If the head of the Master's or Bachelor's degree programme accepts you on their course for the year 2018-2019, we will then inform you of the next procedures to be carried out.

This course is aimed at foreign students who wish to pursue their studies at University Paris-Sud but who do not have the necessary level (B2) in French. (B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is the minimum level required to join most of our Masters’ programmes. http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/linguistic/CADRE_EN.asp).

The objective of the course is to give the individual students the tools (linguistic and other) to become autonomous and to acquire a sound knowledge of life in France. This requires a heavy teaching schedule and a solid personal investment.

*Level B2 in French by the end of the Diploma Course.

Course content:

Duration: I year divided into 2 semesters, teaching by module with an obligatory French for Academic Purposes module.

- 280 teaching hours in Semester 1
- 290 teaching hours in Semester 2

The course comprises 5 teaching modules:
Listening and Understanding
Oral Expression and Written Expression
Reading and Understanding
Culture and Civilisation
French for Academic Purposes.

Dates:  from the beginning of September 2017 to the end of June 2018
Class size: Maximum 16 per group

Teaching methods and other activities:

A balance of taught classes and guided self-study with access to a well-equipped resource centre are the cornerstones of the programme. Talks and lectures from academic specialists are also included. Regular field trips and social activities are arranged throughout the year.

Assessment: Continuous assessment plus exams at the end of each semester.

Course fee: €4,150 (+ administrative fees = For reference, in 2016: University tuition fees: 391€  + Obligatory Securité Sociale: 215€ + Obligatory medical visit: 5.10€)
